When bringing home a new puppy it is easy to get carried away buying items at the pet store. Many new pet owners become overwhelmed with the vast selection of pet products and buy unnecessary items while forgetting essential items. Stick to this short list of 10 essential items for your new puppy to avoid overspending and cluttering your home with useless pet items.
1. Quality Dog Food: Choose a high quality pet food, puppy formulation, to meet the needs of your growing pup. Look for foods made with real meat, whole grains and lacking artificial ingredients. Many quality brands offer dog food coupons to reduce the cost.
2. Bowls: Choose heavy duty bowls with nonslip bottoms.
3. Collar: Purchase a durable nylon collar that measures two inches larger than your pet’s neck. Check the collar weekly as your pet grows.
4. ID Tag: Include your name and current phone number so that your new pup finds his way home if he gets away from you.
5. Leash: A 6 foot leather or nylon leash is all you need!
6. Grooming items: Your pet will need daily grooming. At minimum pick up a quality brush and comb.
7. Treats: Healthy pet treats are useful for training your puppy.
8. Dog Crate: The dog crate makes a nice area for your pet to sleep that confines him, keeping him out of trouble when you cannot watch him. These are useful for travel and potty training as well.
9. Toys: Find durable products to entertain your pet and provide him with an acceptable item to chew on.
10. Flea control products: Ask your vet about when to start preventative flea medications to prevent infestation and dog allergies to fleas.
Obviously this list is not all-inclusive but it makes for a good place to start. As you get to know your new puppy, you will learn how best to address his needs.
